Ventilation is the part beginners most often underbuy — a great light and tent with weak airflow leads to heat stress, humidity problems, and (for anyone growing where odor matters) a very noticeable smell. Size your fan and filter to your tent's volume, not to what looks impressive on a shelf.
How to choose

CFM sized to tent volume
Calculate tent volume (length x width x height in feet), then adjust upward: roughly ×1.25 if running a carbon filter, plus extra for long duct runs or bends in the ducting. A 4x4x6.5 ft tent with a filter attached needs a fan rated around 130 CFM minimum — 150–200 CFM gives comfortable headroom.

Carbon filter sized to fan, not the other way around
Size the filter about 25% above the fan's maximum CFM. As a rough guide: 100–200 CFM fans pair with a 4-inch filter, 200–400 CFM with a 6-inch filter, 400–800 CFM with an 8-inch filter.

Filter-before-fan placement
Air should be pulled through the carbon filter and then through the fan, not pushed the other way — pulling through the filter is meaningfully more effective at controlling odor than pushing air through it.

Replacement schedule
Carbon filters lose effectiveness over time. Expect to replace one every 12–18 months under normal use, or every 8–12 months in a heavy-odor environment. Clean any pre-filter sock monthly.
